Victorian Hygiene Products Which Will Make You Question Everything

Thanks to Hollywood, we tend to romanticise history. It all seems like a time full of glamour, poetry and easy perfection but in fact, a simple google search will reveal that the truth is far from that.

Of course, it is no shock to know that hygiene and other basic 21st century luxuries weren’t present or even invented then but you won’t believe just how bad it was. Hint: They once used urine to wash clothes!

Toilet Paper

Soft 2-ply toilet paper seems to have been around for ages but have you ever thought about what people used before it was invented? Well, the answer is defiantly stomach-churning and sore bottom inducing.

Up until 1888, people didn’t always have a standard way to, ahem clean themselves. They used a multitude of different options from sticks wrapped in cloth and dipped in water to leaves and rags- which were reused indefinitely!
