Coffee triggers insomnia
Another major reason why people love to drink coffee is the fact that it helps people stay awake. Although this is one of its best qualities, consuming too much coffee can also interrupt the restorative sleep your body will need each night.
This means you will end up tossing and turning on your bed because of insomnia. Higher caffeine intake will increase the amount of time you get to stay away and reduce your total sleeping time. And this is especially true for the elderly.
The right dose at the right time
A study investigating the timing of coffee consumption and how it affects a person’s sleeping time was conducted on 12 healthy adults. Some were given 400 mg of coffee six hours before bedtime, 3 hours before bedtime, and a few minutes before bedtime.
The time they spent awake at night increased significantly for all groups. The results conclude that it is important that you pay attention to the amount and timing of caffeine that you consume before you sleep.
