From 1999 to 2013, Chavez served as Venezuela’s president. From its inception in 1997 to 2007, he was also the leader and founder of the Fifth Republic Movement’s party political party.
He was born to a middle-class Sabaneta family, Barinas. Chavez led MBR-200 in the unsuccessful coup against the Democratic Action government headed by President Carlos Andres Perez in 1992.

Early Life
Hugo Rafael Chavez was conceived in Sabaneta on the 28th of July 1954. His paternal grandmother Rosa Inez Chavez, a small three-room house in Sabaneta, was where he was born.
The family was Amerindian, Afro-Venezuelan and Spanish. His parent, Hugo de los Reyes Chavez was described as a proud COPEI member. His parents sent him and his older brother, who was not from the area, to live with Rosa, their grandmother. In the middle of the 1960s, they attended Daniel O’Leary High school.

The extended family built its fortune through legal and illegal means in 1999. From the almost $1 trillion in oil income that PDVSA (the Venezuelan state-controlled oil company) has earned since 1999, $100 billion has been taken by the Chavez family and other criminal organizations.
He had been President of Venezuela since 1999 when Chavez died. He enrolled at the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences when he was 17. He graduated in 1975 as a sublieutenant with a degree in Military Arts & Sciences.
As a counter-insurgency battalion member stationed at Barinas, he entered active military service. His military career lasted 17 years and he held many positions.
Chavez was a teacher in many different capacities. He was the founder of the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement in 1983. In 1998, Chavez ran for president. His public speaking style was known for its flamboyance and use of colloquialisms.
He tried to win the trust of working-class people. He won the election in 1998 with 56% of the vote. Chavez was twice married.
