Alien

The 1979 science fiction horror film is directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O’Bannon. The film generated a media franchise of movies, novels, comic books, video games, and toys.

It follows a crew of a commercial space tug who stumble upon a mysterious derelict spaceship on an undiscovered moon. What follows is them fighting for their lives against an aggressive and deadly extraterrestrial species. The film was met with mixed reviews but did become a huge box office success. Writer O’Bannon swiftly replied to the criticisms surrounding the film’s originality by stating, “I didn’t steal Alien from anybody. I stole it from everybody!”

Eraserhead

Eraserhead, a 1977 American surrealist horror film, can be heavily credited to David Lynch, who wrote, directed, produced, and edited the film. On top of that, Lynch also created its score and sound design.

The black-and-white film tells the story of a man left to care for his grossly deformed child in a desolate industrial landscape. Eraserhead wasn’t initially well received but ended up winning audiences when it started playing as a midnight movie. This film has also been selected to be preserved by the Library of Congress.
